Old Dhaka, Bangladesh
December 2021
These series of photographs were taken in Dhaka, Bangladesh, in the oldest part of the city (Dhaka) which once had a rich history of trade and commerce, as well as grand architecture with buildings dating back to 400 years. The pictures are of people who are engaged in their usual daily activities. This part of Dhaka is underdeveloped, the buildings are dilapidated and streets are dusty and uncared for. Yet amongst this apparent decay there is vibrancy and busyness - it is where the people must find some sort of means of livelihood - pulling a rickshaw, running the neighbourhood mini- shop, selling coconut water, carrying the garbage, transporting vegetables … In the moments when they wait for the next job, they take a break for a chat or to make a paan (betel leaf) to chew on and exchange the gossip of the day. These photographs were taken in 2021 during the start of the day.
